Anyone aged 16 to 65, who weighs at least 50kg, and is in good health can donate blood. Regular donors are essential to maintain a steady blood supply, but first-time donors are equally welcomed and appreciated. SANBS offers various types of blood donations. Whole blood donation is the most common, where a unit of blood is drawn and later separated into its components. Plasma donations are also critical, particularly for patients with liver conditions, burns, or severe infection, and platelet donations are crucial for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. SANBS also ensures that all donated blood is thoroughly tested for infectious diseases, maintaining the highest safety standards. It engages in community education about the importance of blood donation and organises mobile blood drives to reach more potential donors.
